The history and spirit of the American West live on in Elko’s rugged desert beauty. Couples can find plenty to enjoy here during a weekend stay—for your convenience, we’ve noted some of the area’s activities and attractions to help make an itinerary for your trip!
You can start at Sherman Station, which houses Elko’s Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center. Check out the location’s century-old long home, school house, blacksmith shop and more, then keep exploring history at one of Elko’s major sites: the Northeastern Nevada Museum and Western Folklife Center.
Each of these locations are less than a half-hour’s walk from the Ramada Elko Hotel and Casino—the Western Folklife Center is just down the street! If you do go, take a detour through downtown on your way back and see what shops or bars catch your eye. Top-rated restaurants include Luciano’s, McAdoo’s and the B.J. Bull Bakery.
You’ll find even more things to do right outside of town, starting with the highly respected and free-to-attend California Trail Interpretive Center. Some of the area’s gold mines are open for tours from April through October, or you can take a beautiful drive through Lamoille Canyon and try some of the hiking trails on the way. The many ghost towns nearby, such as Jarbridge, are also interesting places to stop at.
Looking to get outside even more? The Ruby Mountains and lake have several hiking routes for you to try. There are also many parks in town, each with their own personality and decorations, from the nature path and water features of Peace Park, to the swings and slides at Johnny Appleseed Park. Bring a picnic lunch and use the tables and barbecue pits at City Park—to complete your afternoon.
