History and How to Play Classic Casino Games

Roulette originated in France in the 18th century. One of the earliest depictions of the game in America was in 1886 and the game included the numbers one through 28, a single zero, a double zero, and an Eagle to representing American liberty. Today’s wheels only include numbered slots, though U.S. casinos still use the double zero wheel. The zero and double zero are green, and in numbers one to 10 and 19 to 28, odd numbers are red and even numbers are black, and in numbers 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, odds are black and evens are red.

The game consists of a colored and numbered wheel and a table that lays out the numbers and colors where you place your bet.

Etiquette and How to Play Roulette

Roulette has a wide variety of options when it comes to placing your bets. Payouts are based on probability and bets can be placed on the exact number the ball will land in, a range of numbers, the color, or whether the number will be even or odd. Bets on the outside of the table represent a larger range/grouping of numbers.

Like other games in casinos, roulette will often have betting minimums and maximums. Players can place bets as the ball spins, but cannot place a chip down after the dealer announces, “No more bets.”

Once the ball lands the dealer will place a marker on the table to show all players the winning number and to collect and distribute winnings. Also like other casino games, it’s best to keep your hands to yourself. If you’ve won the dealer will give you your winnings; do not take them directly off the table.

Types of bets:

Single: A single number bet, the chip is placed in the center of a number square on the table.

Split: A bet on two adjoining numbers, either horizontal or vertical.

Corner: A bet on four numbers in a square block.

Outside: Outside bets are bets on a large range of numbers. Manque is betting that a number between one and 18 will come up, and Passe is betting on 19 to 36 coming up. These payouts tend to be smaller.

Dozen bets: Betting on either the first, second, or third group of dozen numbers, 1 – 12, 13 – 24, 25 – 36.

Column bets: On the table are three vertical lines with 12 numbers, a column bet is betting that one of those numbers within the column comes up.

Red or black: Placing a bet on the color that will come up.

Even or odd: Betting that an even or odd number will come up.
